Flat Panel Televisions

Have you noticed the change that has come about in the televisions that are available today? You may need to look a little closer...

Yes, they are certainly bigger and they now come with more options like wide screens or super wide screens, and even the display itself is of a considerably better quality. Some of the premium models even come with a built DVD player and other image and video display facilities.

And not surprisingly, the prices of these televisions has increased too. But the most significant change, and a very visible one at that, has been the fact that most of the televisions we see nowadays have a flat panel screen. If you missed that, you're probably already the owner of a flat panel television!

Flat panel televisions is merely the generic name of the latest display systems being used in televisions. Most of the new flat panel televisions fall under two broad technologies. The bulk of the older flat panel televisions are liquid crystal display televisions, and many of the latest flat panel televisions use the plasma display technology. These are the two main technologies that have succeeded in replacing and slowly making obsolete the good old cathode ray televisions that we have all grown used to seeing in our homes.

Flat panel televisions came into the picture partly because of some inherent problems with conventional, cathode ray televisions. There's nothing wrong with the images that these conventional televisions produce - they use a technology that continues to be a mainstay of television production the world over - but conventional televisions had a few design flaws that have helped flat panel televisions take root and grow their market share.

For one thing, conventional televisions are bulky. In some cases, they are absolutely huge and so heavy that it takes two people to life them. Another reason is the restriction on the size of the screen. With increasing numbers of people going in for home theatre systems and other forms of digital entertainment, the size of the screen has always been a sticking point. Conventional televisions can't realistically offer screens larger than 42 inches, but thanks to their technological advancement, flat panel screens can and do offer much bigger screen sizes.

The third concern with conventional television screens using the cathode ray tube is the fact that often they just don't seem to fit in aesthetically with the rest of our gadgets and refuse to be integrated into the overall interior design of the living rooms. Which is why most of the older or more traditional households which continue to use the conventional televisions, also continue to have a dedicated television viewing corner, one that adamantly refuses to integrate into the overall design scheme of the rest of the room.

Flat panel televisions lend themselves to excellent integration. Some of the flat panel televisions available are so integral to the design that we can be hard pressed to find the television when we enter a room. They can look like anything from works of art to grand mirrors and function like technological masterpieces.

Even in terms of the quality of image presentation, the flat panel televisions score over the conventional televisions. Since they use atomic and crystal display technology, flat panel televisions are able to present more pixels with an increased number of visible colors, which gives a much clearer picture and is easier on the eye.

Incidentally, they also last longer, come in a much larger range of sizes and offer a better and brighter viewing experience in most rooms. Do you still need a reason to go in for flat panel televisions?
